My Pin Theory

As I hurried down the parking garage stairs this morning (all four flights) on my way to my class, something caught my eye. There, lying on one of the many steps was a … why yes, I think it was… a straight pin!

Despite the fact that a girl with noisy flip flops another flight of stairs above me was fast closing in on me, I took the time to stop and pick it up. Only a Menno girl can understand the blessings of straight pins. (Just how do people survive without them?) And I examined it the entire way down the stairs and carefully stuck it into my sleeve to preserve its presence on my person.

It was a very windy day, and my theory was that Sharon (who had arrived at least 15 minutes before and had walked the very same path as I) must’ve somehow lost her pin. And I thought, What are the chances of that happening??? She loses a pin, and I just happen to find it!?! I decided it must be a God thing, and once I arrived in my classroom, I tucked it away into my pencil bag for safekeeping.

I was reminded of my theory every time I delved into my pencil bag thereafter—which was the entire day. And when I triumphantly revealed my treasure to Sharon tonight, it turns out that she, in fact, had NOT lost a pin. A theory deflated—a great story that wasn’t.

So I want to know.. just who out there besides a Mennonite wears straight pins in such a position as to lose them on the stairs of the parking garage? It just doesn’t make much sense.

My theory has now changed to this: It was indeed a God thing—He was simply looking out for me because of the Very Windy Day. In fact, at one point, I had to take shelter beside the Fine Arts Building for fear of losing my own pins.

And it was comforting to know that God had given me a Spare.
